TITLE: Bringing Back The Ark
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 13:1 - 14
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of[a] it[b] during the reign of Saul.” The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people. So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name. They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets. When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God. Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[c] David was afraid of God that day and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household and everything he had.
NOTES:
> The story above is written for a purpose. The story started as David conferred with each of his officers, so here we see David discussing matters with his officers regarding the ark of the Lord. They spoke of bringing back the Ark and it seems like the right thing to do. It is even indicated that the whole assembly agreed to this decision because it "seemed" right to all the people. Now i want to focus on this because, David's desire to bring the Ark back is definitely good. Clearly, David's heart wants to be close to God yet in this story, there was no indication of David asking God about his idea of bringing the ark back to Jerusalem. In truth, he discussed it among men instead of the Lord. And sometimes, our hearts may be in the right place and we want to do the right thing but the truth of the matter is, we are dependent to God and everything we do or decide even if we know it is for the best of everyone or even if we believe God wants it, the fact remains that we ought to speak to Him first even before men. Now note that this is just my own opinion but i made this realization because the result of this act, made David afraid of the Lord. Now we know that when God moves, He sets everything in order and there is peace. Yet in this story, we see David fearing God and even decided to leave the ark in Obed-Edom the Gittite's house instead of his. His actions may have caused him fear but to Obed-Edom who welcomed the Ark in his house, to him he receives blessing from the Lord to his household and everything he had. So in truth, David's desire to bring the Ark back could possibly be God's plan as well but his action of talking about this with his men rather than with God caused him to be afraid and led him away from the Lord for just a time. Let it served as a lesson to us all.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, my Great and Amazing Lord. I know that You desire to be close to me and I want to be close to You but Lord help me to always make You my priority because many times I am blinded of my own personal decisions or skills that I often neglect to involve in my decisions. Help me Lord to always present my ideas to You before men. Help me to desire like David did to always be close to You but no matter how sincere and right my desires or goals are, let me always be humble and present them to You and involve You because only with You will my suggestions or ideas will work. Help me Lord to always be passionate in having an intimate and deeper relationship with You because with You in my life, blessings just follows. So indeed, all i truly need is You! I love You Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
