TITLE: The Shunamite’s Son Restored to Life

Scripture: 2 Kings 4:8 – 37

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ The Shunamite woman is one of the main characters in Elisha’s time and her story is written so we can learn from her life.  In the passage, we know that the shunamite woman is a well to do woman, she is wealthy and insisted that Elisha eat a meal every time he passed by their home.  She was blessed by God thru Elisha because of her actions and character and so today we are going to learn about her so we can imitate what is right in her to be pleasing to our God.

The Shunamite Woman:
1)     She has a heart for God, for God’s people, and God’s work (vs8 – 10).  The Shunamite Woman is kind but her heart insists on showing this kindness to the man of God – The shunamite woman in this story was not directed by God or told by someone to do good for Elisha, she developed the heart to help the man of God and to support him in God’s work without anyone telling her to do so.  When we have the heart for the Lord, it goes by saying that our heart also goes out to God’s people and His work.
2)    She does good not looking for something in return (vs13).  Elisha asked her what she wants but she did not ask for anything, though she could have but she didn’t.  She did all the good works she did without thinking that she will have something in return and clearly, she was content.  Even when Elisha asked her what she wants, she didn’t ask for anything more.
3)    She was persistent (vs21 – 25).  When her son died, she didn’t lose hope.  Even when others already accepted that her son was dead, she saddled up and went to Elisha.  When Elisha asked her what’s wrong, she again said everything was alright.  Here, is another good trait.  She did not complain or went wild or became bitter, she was calm and reminded Elisha of the time he spoken to her about her gift of miracle, her son (vs 28).

Results:
1)     She got a miracle (vs15 – 17).  She didn’t ask but God knew her heart so she received a miracle, her son.
2)    Her need was given importance (vs 25 – 30).  When Elisha saw her coming, Elisha told his servant to meet her.  When she came to Elisha and touched his feet.  Elisha stopped his servant from stopping her.  Surely, Elisha had some work on that day at the Mountain of God but he stopped for the woman’s sake and went back home to her to give her another miracle.  The woman didn’t even have to ask… it was already given.  She didn’t have to ask for healing.  God knew her heart at that moment and Elisha went rushing back to her house to heal her son.

3)    She got everything she lost and even more (2 kings 8:1 – 6).  The woman was told by Elisha to go to Philistines Territory for there will be famine in the land but when God lift the famine, the woman came back to her land after 7 years and everything she owned was restored back to her even the profits earned from her land during the time when she was away, were all returned back to her!
