Title: David Becomes King Over Israel
Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:1 – 25
God’s Message / God’s Promise / God’s
Commands:
→
All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said,
“We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, while
Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military
campaigns. And the Lord said to
you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their
ruler.’” When all the elders of Israel had come to King
David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king
over Israel. David was thirty years old when he became king, and he
reigned forty years. In Hebron he
reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned
over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.
NOTES:
Ø
When it is God’s will, everything falls into its proper
place! Even the people who
you least expect will be put into the right perspective because when God moves,
everything is perfect! So whatever it
is, whether a promotion, a fight, a relationship, etc, follow God’s will
because His plans are perfect for us. In
His perfect time, there will be no opposition or conflict. God will iron it all out to ensure that when
we receive His success, it is not bitter-sweet but just pure deliciously
sweet. Hallelujah! So why look for other ways when we can trust
the will of God for us, which is perfect, pure, and worry-free!
→The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the
Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get
in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David
cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of
Zion—which is the City of David. On that day David had
said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft to
reach those ‘lame and blind’ who are David’s enemies.[a]” That is why they say, “The ‘blind
and lame’ will not enter the palace.” David then took
up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the
area around it, from the terraces[b] inward. And he became
more and more powerful, because the LordGod
Almighty was with him. Now Hiram king of Tyre
sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs and carpenters and stonemasons, and
they built a palace for David. Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king
over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.
After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and
wives in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him. These
are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar,
Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and
Eliphelet.
NOTES:
Ø
With God on our side, we become more and more powerful to
establish His work in our lives! Even
what seem impossible, we are able to do or conquer because God is with us! Again the purpose of our power, our strength,
our wisdom, our wealth, and everything good and great in our lives is to
establish and bring glory only to the One who deserves it, Jesus Christ! Let us never forget that. Even in the old times, this is how it is, and
today, it is still the same. But note
that this is only possible because GOD IS WITH US! Meaning it is important that we spend time
with the Lord and fill our lives with His presence because victory, provision,
and all other good things come only from Him!
Praise the Lord!
→When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over
Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it
and went down to the stronghold. Now the Philistines had come and spread
out in the Valley of Rephaim; so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the
Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will
surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.” So
David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters
break out, theLord has broken
out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[c] The
Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them
off. Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; so
David inquired of the Lord,
and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and
attack them in front of the poplar trees. As soon as you hear the sound of
marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean
the Lord has gone out in
front of you to strike the Philistine army.” So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck
down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon[d] to Gezer.
NOTES:
Ø
Even as a king, David was totally depended on the Lord! His attack strategies, his
decisions to go to war, his next step…David always seek God’s Will and never
made a move on his own because he is acting in behalf of God’s people and not
his own. David understood that he was
just an instrument and nothing more. He
may be a king and the Israelites may be his people but he knew that they are
all God’s. He knew that he was nothing
but God’s instruments and it is God who will direct his ways, no one else –
that is why David was known as the man after God’s own heart because he was
totally dependent on God’s desired plan and will. Let us have the same heart as David has and
become totally dependent on our Lord and King!
Ø
When we allow God, He will go out in front of us to strike
our enemy! God is a creator, He is love, He is grace but He can be a
warrior and fight with us against our enemy.
Know that when our enemy strikes us, he is ultimately striking God
because we are nothing but mere instrument of God’s plan so our enemy is
obviously putting a stop to whatever God’s plan. So God will definitely go before us and fight
them out. So let us just focus on God’s
will and truly He will take care of everything else.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
mighty God and conqueror king! All glory,
honor and praise belong to You! Lord I
