Title: Saul Tries to Kill David
Scripture: 1 Samuel 19:1 – 24
God’s Message / God’s Promise / God’s
Commands:
→
Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David.
But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David and
warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your
guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there. I will go out
and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him
about you and will tell you what I find out.” Jonathan spoke well of David
to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong to his
servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you
greatly. He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine.
The Lord won a great
victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you
do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?” Saul
listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put
to death.” So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He
brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.
NOTES:
Ø
God gives us our own advocate who not only believes us but
fights for us! Jesus is our advocate! David
did no wrong yet king Saul envied him to the point of wanting to kill him. When we do the will of the Lord in our lives,
God ensures our safety and protection.
He will send us supporters who are willing to fight and support us even
in difficult times such as David’s situation in this passage. God will work for us and many times, He just
asks us to stay put for He has send someone else to speak for our behalf. Praise Jesus!
Today, Jesus is our mediator! He
is our advocate! So when we fail or when
the devil tries to pull us to him from the embrace of the Father, Jesus comes
and cut the rope that ties us to the devil’s trap. Jesus breaks the shackles that the Devil has
on us. Jesus is our Jonathan and He
speaks well to the Father about us all the time. Thank You Jesus!
→ Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the
Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him. But an
evil[a] spirit from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting
in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre, Saul
tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul
drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape. Saul
sent men to David’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But
Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t run for your life tonight,
tomorrow you’ll be killed.” So Michal let David down through a window, and
he fled and escaped. Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed,
covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head. When Saul
sent the men to capture David, Michal said, “He is ill.” Then
Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his
bed so that I may kill him.” But when the men entered,
there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair. Saul said
to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he
escaped?” Michal told him, “He said to me, ‘Let me get away. Why should I kill
you?’”
NOTES:
Ø
God will not allow the devil’s trap to succeed; God will
always find a way to get us out of the Devil’s entrapment! The Lord used Michal, king saul’s
own daughter to warn David and set him free from his father’s evil plans. Our Father since the beginning until today
and even tomorrow will always find a way out for us so we will not fall into
the trap the devil has carefully planned for us. Even when we do find ourselves trap, God will
always find a way out. Hallelujah! Thank You Jesus because You are my way
out! Thank You because You will not
allow me to fully become a slave of the devil.
You have come to break me free! Amen!
→ When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at
Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went
to Naioth and stayed there. Word came to Saul: “David is
in Naioth at Ramah”; so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a
group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the
Spirit of God came on Saul’s men, and they also prophesied. Saul was
told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a
third time, and they also prophesied. Finally, he himself left for Ramah
and went to the great cistern at Seku. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and
David?”“Over in Naioth at Ramah,” they said. So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah.
But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying until
he came to Naioth. He stripped off his garments,
and he too prophesied in Samuel’s presence. He lay naked all that day and
all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
NOTES:
Ø
The Spirit of the Lord is so powerful that no evil spirit can
stand before it! Saul was
consumed by an evil spirit and he seeks to kill David yet in the midst of the
prophets prophesying, even Saul who has the evil spirit prophesied! Let this be a warning that not all prophets
are of God but in the presence of the Lord Almighty, even the devil bows down
and speaks the Lord’s words! This is the
Power of our Lord. The devil has no hold
on God and in the presence of the Lord, the devil becomes good. Hallelujah!
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
great and powerful Lord. Mighty and
conquering King! I am amazed of Your
great works in my life. I want to
sincerely apologize for allowing myself to get inside the enemy’s trap at
times. And in some cases, I voluntarily
steps into it, thinking that I can always get out on my own. Lord I am weak and foolish. I need Your wisdom and strength. I need Your presence. The presence that breaks the devil and for a
moment, uses his mouth to speak God’s words.
I need Your powerful presence in my life so whatever evil in my heart
could not stand it and will melt away.
Lord I need to be filled by Your goodness, Your love, Your words, Your
favor, Your presence that I may have the strength to stand up against my enemy
and win the battle and foresee the traps he laid out for me. I am nothing but a weak soldier and my
strength and power comes only from You Jesus.
Save me Lord for I am vulnerable and helpless. Only You can find me a way out of my enemy’s
traps. Show me the way Lord that I may
not lead myself in to the cage that my enemy prepared for me. Jesus thank You for becoming my supporter and
advocate. I am truly blessed to have
You. Without You, I will be forever lost
and destroyed. Jesus, I need You. Open my eyes to Your ways Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
